Second, cost. A fiber laser that can engrave stainless steel tumblers starts at $2,800 for 20W and goes to $5,500 for 50W. You need a rotary attachment for tumblers at $350 to $500. You need ventilation because the laser burns coating and creates fumes. And you need to learn LightBurn software and settings: speed 2000 mm/s, power 80%, frequency 30 kHz for powder coat removal without burning metal.

For a shop doing 50 tumblers a day, laser time is 4 to 6 minutes per full wrap tumbler, plus setup. At $20 per hour labor, that's $1.66 labor per tumbler plus machine amortization of $2,800 over 24 months at 1000 tumblers per month equals $0.11 per tumbler. So $1.77 cost before tumbler.

And powder coated stainless steel for the laser must be a laserable powder coat. Some cheap powder coat melts instead of burning clean, leaving brown edges. You have to test each tumbler brand.

Laser looks premium because it's etched metal. But customers today want full color. That's why laser shops add UV DTF to offer both.

Why Sublimation on Stainless Steel Only Works on White and Fades

Sublimation on stainless steel needs a special tumbler. Regular stainless steel tumblers don't work. You need sublimation tumblers that have white polyester coating sprayed on them. The coating is what holds sublimation ink.

• Sublimation process: Print on sublimation paper with sublimation ink, wrap paper around tumbler, tape, heat in oven or with heat press at 385F for 6 minutes, remove paper. Ink turns to gas and bonds to polyester coating.
• Colors look good initially. Full color, photos, gradients all possible. That's the upside.
• Downsides are real.
• First, you can only sublimate on white or very light coated tumblers. You cannot sublimate on black, navy, or stainless bare tumblers because sublimation ink is translucent and needs white base. • Second, cost. Sublimation printer $400, ink $80 per set, paper $30, plus sublimation oven $300 or tumbler press $200. Total startup $700 to $1000. Per tumbler, ink and paper cost $1.20 to $1.80. • Third, durability. Sublimation coating scratches. In our 2025 tests, sublimation tumblers scratched visibly with keys after 20 cycles, and color faded 12% after 120 hours of direct sun. Sublimation is also not dishwasher safe, coating chips after 30 to 40 dishwasher cycles.
• And if the sublimation coating has defects, you get white spots that can't be fixed. You trash a $9 tumbler.

Sublimation was king in 2020. In 2026, UV DTF replaced it for stainless steel because it works on any color and needs no oven.

How to Apply UV DTF to Stainless Steel That is Bare Polished

Bare polished stainless steel is shiny silver, no coating. It looks premium but is hardest for UV DTF.

• Bare stainless has low surface energy, 28 dynes, plus oil from the factory. Water beads tight. UV DTF adhesive needs 38+ dynes to hold well. So on bare, you must clean twice with 75% alcohol and use an adhesion promoter pen like 3M Primer 94 at $8 per pen that covers 100 tumblers.
• After primer, wait 60 seconds, then apply UV DTF. Squeegee harder than on powder coated because metal doesn't flex. Peel carrier slowly at 180 degrees flat.
• On bare stainless, UV DTF looks like a sticker on metal, which it is. Edge is visible if you look close. But colors pop because silver reflects through clear areas if you use clear areas in design. Most designs use full white backing so silver doesn't show.
